Spray Addiction Information
Nose Spray Addiction Information such as Causes and Side Effects.
There are labels on the back of nose sprays that warn not to use more than 3 or 4 days, but a lot of us (like me) ignore them. We just want relief at that time. And we don't realize really what the consequences fully are if we overuse.
But when we don't heed those warnings and continue to use the spray, we get something called Rebound Congestion. You start using the spray, then you find you are using it more and more frequently. The length of time the spray opens your airway is shorter and shorter.
Basically, the chemical properties of the nose sprays cause abnormal swelling of the nasal mucosa. The nose spray gives a time of relief, then when it wears off, it blocks the nasal airway completely causing extreme discomfort.
So the answer is to stop using the spray and let your nose become normal again, right? Not so easy. You go crazy. You know that the spray is causing the problem, but you go right back to it anyway.
Some of the other problems you may have from prolonged use of
over-the-counter nasal spray is burning and stinging of your sinuses. You can actually damage your nasal passages and get holes in them.
You can also get high blood pressure or increased blood pressure. That is what happened to me. I went from taking one blood pressure pill to four. After I quit the spray, my blood pressure got better.
Some of the other side effects are headaches, sneezing, burning of sinusus, nose bleeds, sore throat, and sometimes a reduction of smell and taste.

RHINITIS MEDICAMENTOSUM (RM) Basically this means being addicted to nose sprays.
Major Head Cold or Sinus Infection- (I gotta work, I gotta function let me just use the spray to help me get through the day while I'm sick.)
Allergies- (Same things. I am stuffy, sneezing, etc. Maybe I can get some relief withe the nasal spray. May be seasonal or chronic)
Pregnancy- (an increase in hormones causes your mucous membranes to swell) THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED TO ME. And if you are also dealing with morning sickness or other issues, a stuffy nose can be too much.
Panic Attacks-(This also happened to me and while I was pregnant. When my nose would get stuffy, I would have a panic attack. And anyone who has ever had a panic attack knows what that is like. I take medicine for the panic attacks, but could not take it while I was pregnant.)
Structural abnormalities -(such as deviated septum, etc)
What are some of the causes of sinus congestion that originally caused the addiction to nose spray?
